ROBOBLOG III Archives

Journey's End

As of this writing, I'm sitting at the Long Beach airport; my plane takes off in about an hour and forty-five minutes, but my computer doesn't have that much juice. I wonder if there's an electrical outlet around here ... hmm.

Anyway, Expo, was ... ah, eventful. I'll give you a bit of that on the next Roboblog Chronicles either tomorrow or on the 4th (though if you dig around enough you can find out what I'm alluding to). I taped the whole panel, but I won't make you sit through all of it -- man, even if I *did* have a paid YouTube account, I wouldn't make you sit through all that! No, you want the GOOD parts, right? So the good parts you'll get.

I just hope my camera picked up everything that was said. For a guy who does so many panels a year, Tommy seems to have a hard time actually speaking into his mic.

Of course the "big" news was the Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles Special Edition 2-DVD set, with commentary by Tommy Yune, Scott Glasgow (composer), and Ford Riley (screenwriter), deleted scenes (huh, huh -- look, nekkid people!), and the complete Robotech 3000 promo animation. Oh, and the box is white where the old box was black. You know what I wonder (and completely failed to ask Tommy & Co.)? I wonder what the price point is on this if the bare bones disc has a list price of $30 (though as someone once told me, only suckers pay suggested retail).

Tommy also keeps trying to sell us the New Gen cell phone game. That must be why he didn't have anything to say on the Shadow Chronicles sequel -- they haven't even started on it because he's spending all his time shooting Invid on his cell phone. There we go.

Battery power's running low, so I gotta go. As always, more later.

  • Even though Shadow Chronicles has slowly grown on me, I can't really justify buying another edition. Why not just include these things on the regular disc? Oh, right. Gotta make more money off DVD sales.

Of course, it'd be great if the Special Edition turned out to have some massive amount of deleted footage, LoTR style. But then again, if it was like that, I'd have to buy it...

Any word on when "The Art of The Shadow Chronicles" will hit actual stores? 'Cause, you know, that'd be great to actually own.

  • (long heavy sigh)why am I not surprised that the only “new” Robotech merchandise I have to look forward to is just a repackaged version something that already exists.(even bigger sigh)why am I not surprised that I will buy it the first day it hits the shelves. I don’t want to sound ungrateful because I really enjoy what’s being created right now, it’s a marvel that after all this time Robotech merchandise is still being produced at all, but sometimes I just sit back and ask myself how many times will I buy the same product over and over. Oh well, I guess that’s my war to wage between me and my wallet. Thanks for the update JLS, cant wait to hear the full story.

  • Fernando: First thing I thought of as well. I hope it will be at LEAST as entertaining ... we'll see in November, I guess.

JHC: Mostly seems to be animation errors, weird expressions, etc. I recorded the footage they showed at the panel, so I'll try and YouTube it when I get home. That'll give you an idea what kind of "deleted scenes" we're talking about. Tommy was bandying about the idea of him, Ford, and Scott showing up at the bottom of the screen, MST3K-style, to comment. That COULD be fun ...

As for Art of ..., who the hell knows at this point? I don't think you could get a straight answer out of Tommy if you tied him up and started slapping him silly with a trout. I just don't think his brain is wired that way. (And if a horrible Harmony Gold apologist bastard is saying this ... ^_-)

anon: Yes, I was there. I saw the before & after -- one minute, Khyron_Prime is all like, "Oh, can I have a interview?" and the next minute I'm looking over and there's whipped cream everywhere and Tommy's getting a camera. Again, more later.

Rosic & medmapguy: Repackaging over & over again -- it is the Robotech way. *sigh* I feel your pain.

  • The thing I find troubling is that instead of building on the momentum created by the release of Shadow Chronicles, by either wetting the appetite by giving hints of will be R:SC 2 or at least pre-production stills!

Seriously, the window of opportunity that was created by R:SC is disappearing. And all we get are re-dresses of products.

Harmony Gold didn't need a homerun for Shadow Chronicle, it just need to get on base. But the sequel will need to be extraordinary to keep new fans waiting. Or else people will move on.

The way I see things heading I don't think Harmony Gold is capabale of hitting a Home Run, and the time for hitting a base run is running out.

And to continue the sports metaphor I fear eventually people won't bother to even see the 9th inning.

  • Well, remember this: Harmony Gold's not going to spill all at Anime Expo when they've still got the far-larger San Diego Comic-Con coming up at the end of the month. If they're going to announce something at AX, they want to have something EVEN BIGGER to announce or show off at San Diego. Perhaps that's when we'll see something of Shadow Chronicles 2. Fingers crossed ...

  • I seem to distinctly recall Tommy Yune saying at the Robotech Panel that the next The Shadow Chronicles should not be expected until AT LEAST 2009.

Take it to the bank and don't expect anything different from that at San Diego Comic-Con. At least he was being realistic.

  • I am apsolutely sure about it... and if he says not before 2009 --give it +3 years on top of that.

What about Bateman??....Any word on why was he fired/left??

  • You know what? I'll talk to Tom. See if he wants to do an interview or something to clear the air.

  • Just got my hands on the Art book today, came in the mail. I like it, but I wish it had more info, and new info as opposed to stuff many of us already know, new stuff like actual stats on the Haydonite ships etc
