The Roboblog Chronicles: Episode 16 - Break Out The Popcorn

Yes, the Roboblog Chronicles saga continues this week with discussion of the live action movie in the works at Warner Bros. In this episode I get really hot and bothered about the prospect of them screwing up the Rick and Minmei relationship, which may seem kind of odd until you really think about how that relationship works -- or rather, how it fails to work. It's actually a pretty interesting thing, fragile and precious, like a snowflake.

No, I'm not on any medication right now. Why do you ask?

In other news:

  • Vincent McHenry, my fellow contributing writer to The Art of Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles, would like me to mention the Robotech Photo Contest running at Robotech.com. I guess it's his brainchild, and it looks like it could be a lot of fun, so pull out your toys and home-made props and costumes and stuff and go have yourself some fun. I'd enter, except that I think it'd look hinky if I won anything, and besides, I think I've got enough on my plate right now ...

  • Roger Harkavy lets us know that the Aoshima reengineerings and repaintings of the Toynami Masterpiece Alphas under the Mospeada banner in Japan have been pushed back to October. Which is fine, because that probably means they'll be all the better, right?

  • The Space Station Liberty talkcast has lined up its next two rounds of guests. On September 14, Chris will be talking to Tommy Yune and Kevin Siembieda, presumably about the recently completed reacquisition of the ROBOTECH RPG license by Palladium Books.

Then, September 16, Chris will have on Aftermath writer/artist Bruce Lewis, which means I'd better get my damn act together and get my Bruce Lewis interview posted this week. I guess the saying is true: he who hesitates, loses.

Of course, in the end, you all win, because you get to hear two Bruce Lewis interviews within mere days of one another. How about that, ladies and gentlemen?

You can see the times for Chris's interviews, listen in, and join in on the fun and frivolity via the Space Station Liberty talkcast homepage here.

  • You said it Cap. I do not want to see them mess the relationships up. Or worse..writing Lisa out of the picture or making her just another bridge bunny.

An idea occurs to me about the Robotech/Macross issue for Japan.

The action can be the same..but scripting could in fact differ so that Each side in the legal battles can have the cake and eat it too.

And lets be honest here....we are not talking about a small amount of money. Big West is not blind to what this could do for them...neither is HG/Tat. The best case scenario is that the long standing feud is forgotten in the face of potential profits.

For the love of god, I hope HG is getting off their asses and securing toy lines now. I hope the script follows along the lines you mentioned.

One thing is for sure...if it happens (always a question) HG is going to have to act fast. Hell I can almost see what is going to happen if the movie does happen. WB is going to buy out HG. It makes sense for WB...1 less partner to share merchandise profits with...adds a nice stable of movies and such for future dvd releases...and gets them the complete rights if the movie turns out right and warrants further movies.

  • What separates "Robotech" from other franchises (like "Transformers") is the human element. Veritechs aren't just big robots - they're controlled by people. And people have complex emotions/relationships. I hope that isn't lost in the production of the live-action film.

  • One thing that I hope fans don't get is too over-excited. That's not a knock on HG's abilities, but just the fact that movies often get announced and end up in development for years. While not actively following projects such as the He-Man and Voltron live action movies, I have yet to hear anything past the initial anouncement.

This will be different given how much HG communicates with the fans, but if Kevin's SSL show is any indication of future communication, it's going to be a lot of "I'm not at liberty to say" type of answers. Which will be true, because they won't be.

Plus from what Kevin implied on SSL, this will be handled mainly by WB so they may not be fully in the light. But who knows?

I just hope that months, maybe years of silence about this project until it gets greenlit won't leave more fans bitter thinking "oh yeah, another Robotech project not getting made." HG seems to be extremely cautious at this point and is not probably going to allow themselves to make the kind of premature announcements they did with Shadow Chronicles.
