Fer reviews LSB II; HG screws up Masterpiece price.

  • See, I'm not the only one who likes Lonely Soldier Boy II -- good ol' Fer Goodnough praises it as possibly the best ROBOTECH music album ever. I'm inclined to agree with him.

  • Robotech.com has opened up pre-orders for the Masterpiece Collection Maia Sterling's Shadow Fighter. Last night the pre-order price was $59.99, the same reduced price that the remaining three original Toynami New Gen Masterpiece Alpha Fighters (red, green, Shadow) sell for there. Whoops! It was (and is) supposed to be $79.99, so all those pre-orders got canceled ... *sigh*

(Props to Roger Harkavy for alerting me to the change. And to think, that $59.99 price had me all excited last night. Phoo.)

  • Adrian Lozano @ OverDrive provides more photos of the Beagle Mospeada, which will in slightly rejiggered form come out Stateside as the Masterpiece Cyclone; Yaco @ Yacolog has his own to share, too.

A Link To Not Quite A Review Of Not Quite The Masterpiece Cyclone.

Adrian A. Lozano snaps some pictures and shares some thoughts on Beagle's 1/10 Mospeada Ride Armor -- the toy that, with a different head, will become Toynami's first Robotech Masterpiece Collection Cyclone -- HERE at Over-Drive-Inc.com. This is only the first part of his review, covering the teal-haired rider figure.

Half a month of Robotech & Macross links.

The pics have got nothing to do with the links; I'm just in a Masters kind of mood. It's probably that I'm on a "Holy crap, Palladium knocked that Macross book out of the park -- can't wait for the Masters book!" high ...

  • I just finally cracked open my copy of the Macross Saga Sourcebook today. A couple of opinions on it can be found here (from a self-described "tamed" Macross purist), and here (from my old pal Tolarin; if you've checked the comments for my post on Lonely Soldier Boy II, you may have already read this). Both reviews bring some interesting insight to bear.

Me, I think I need another couple of days to digest the book. Lots of interesting revisions, retcons, and rewrites throughout.

  • From the end of last month: a ToonZone review of the Shadow Chronicles Blu-Ray disc. Mind you, if you've seen one review of Shadow Chronicles, you've seen 'em all ...

  • Unless you've been internet-deprived all day long, you've probably heard from one of a dozen or more sources that Warner Bros. ROBOTECH film has picked up some new screenwriters, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who you may be familiar with as the long-standing showrunners for the WB (later CW) TV series Smallville. Kind of a step down from Lawrence "two-thirds of the original Star Wars trilogy and the first/best Indiana Jones movie" Kasdan, if you ask me. (Tip of the hat to fellow Roboblog World Headquarters resident Evan Cass, who e-mailed me the news this morning.)

  • Anime News Network reported last week that Kadokawa plans on launching an all-Macross, all-the-time magazine in January. These are the same folks who've been cranking out an all-Gundam, all-the-time manga anthology, Gundam Ace, since 2001. The article was unclear whether or not this would be a manga anthology as well, though heaven knows it'll probably have at least one monthly manga serial.

  • Meanwhile Bandai has decided to hitch their wagon to umpteen nifty Macross Frontier toys. (Though I gotta say, not a fan of the green one. Really don't care for the head. Also, FAST packs as a store-exclusive? Poor Frontier collectors. I weep for them.)

  • And finally ... the green Tomahawk, it is so pretty. Once again, shame I don't have any f***ing money!!! ARGH!!!

Evan is going to have to start saving his pennies.

Yesterday, while I was putting together my little linky-link post, friend/roommate/former-Emissaries-&-Robotech Roundtable-guy Evan caught a glimpse of the pics of Yamato's 1/60 Tomahawk figure as I was copying down the URL for the link. As I said, lovely figure, it's on my must-buy list along with the MegaHouse version of Lancer's Cyclone.

As I was continuing to admire the detailing of the Tomahawk in the pics, Evan started getting all wistful about the Defender/Raidar X/Rifleman. He walked over to his bookshelf, pulled down his little die-cast one, started talking about back when he had the old Matchbox one when he was a kid and how his dad put together this giant Battletech map to scale with the Matchbox Destroids and all the memories attached to that mecha. Point being, dude's got a soft spot for that design. Loves it.

Evan, this link is for YOU.

This one's gonna be about a hundred bucks (9,800 yen), like the Tomahawk, and it's coming out in December. Maybe I could get it for you for Christmas, if I'm not penniless by then?

    Bitty bits.

    • A Japanese-language review of Yamato's 1/60 Destroid Tomahawk. Can't read it myself, but good god, the photos! What an awesome-looking toy.

    • Collection DX's Leonardo Flores reflects on the completion of his VF-1D kit from Revell's Robotech Defenders line. Wish I could do work like that.

    • Tam from anime retailer Twin Moons Anime complains about the Masterpiece Collection Cyclone price jump, in the context of having to cancel all the pre-orders since it's an over one hundred percent price jump. Mind you, as you and I know, it's now a completely different toy (you did know that, right?), but I wonder if Toynami's kept their retail partners in the loop about all this. It doesn't sound like they have ...

    • Ain't It Cool News reports that the Macross Frontier movie is probably going to be a DYRL-style reimagining of the TV series story (by way of Famitsu magazine). So sorry, folks -- no further resolution.

    • And finally, it's not exactly ROBOTECH news, but friend-of-the-Roboblog Roger Harkavy writes in to tell us that ROBOTECH Producer Carl Macek has a new book out. (Actually, it looks like it's been out since the end of July, but this is the first I've heard of it.) War Eagles is a novel based on a story by King Kong creator Merian C. Cooper, which he intended to be a follow-up to Kong. Looks like frequent Roboblog commenter Treiz liked it, so it's probably worth a look.

It's a quarter past midnight and I'm sitting on a bench.

Which has nothing to do with the links that follow, but right now I'm enjoying the novelty of sitting at my computer in a well-lit park square and shooting things through the air into the internet tubes.

Yeah, yeah, I know ... welcome to the 21st century, Jonathan, glad you could make it!

    Quiet, you.

JoshB from CollectionDX has posted coverage of what all was at the Toynami booth -- including (and this is the part that separates their coverage from the rest) video, with Toynami head honcho George Sohn taking time to point out what's what.

    Elsewhere on the internets:

  • A friend of mine (with whom I went to see The Shadow Chronicles on the big screen in St. Louis) reflects on Roy Fokker's death as one of her top 10 TV moments. (It's #2.)

  • A.J. Wells's fixation on Exedore continues. This one's about the broccoli-headed DYRL version. Also: discussion of the Sentinels novels. Always fun.

  • Someone reviews Robotech: Battlecry years later and doesn't much care for it. Skimming it, it seems they really didn't like the escort missions and base defense missions. Also: yes, the characters are all total knockoffs of other ROBOTECH characters. I totally agree with these sentiments myself, but I still like to pop it in every once in a while. Maybe I'm more tolerant of these flaws? I dunno.

The Roboblog Chronicles Episode 25 - San Diego Dreaming

The second episode from North Central Wisconsin, in which I talk about some of the ROBOTECH stuff out of San Diego (kind of redundant if you've been paying attention to the blog over the weekend) and basically say my last word on the whole Warner live action thing until some SERIOUS news breaks, in light of recent films I've seen.

From The Things I Doubly Don't Want To Do Dept.

I'm selling some of my stuff on eBay, and if you're interested in Japanese-style robots and anime and manga and such (I'm curious what you're doing here if you aren't interested in at least ONE of those things), take a look and see if there's anything you'd be interested in bidding on, if you don't mind. If you see something you like, do bid on it and help reduce my clutter and keep me fed and caffeinated, OK?

    Also:

You know, I actually am on iChat/AIM from time to time these days. See that little link to my screen name in the sidebar? Go ahead. Use it. Bother me. If I'm on iChat, it usually means I'm not doing anything all that important anyway ...

Toynami & Their Promises - Looking at the SDCC Picture Gallery

Flip through this picture gallery and give me your thoughts in the comments thread. Here's what I took away from it.

    1) I think this is the first time they've been so audacious as to show us all four Beta Fighters they intend to release. The Shadow Beta is pretty damn eye-catching, if you ask me. Do we have any release dates?

    2) There's a 1/55 scale Veritech line featuring all-new head sculpts coming up -- and yes, I said Veritech and I mean Veritech. Had the ROBOTECH logo on it. Gotta wonder, are they just slapping new show-accurate heads on the old Takatoku/Bandai molds? Because looking at the -1D they had on display (especially the toy's hands), that's what it looks like.

    3) The GBP armor system for the 1/100 Valkyries looks rather crap.

    4) The 1/100 Battlepod, on the other hand, looks solid, if a bit static. I like it a bit better than the sorta weird, wiry Revoltech Regult that Kaiyodo released a few months back.

    5) Maia's lavender Shadow Fighter comes out in December, if Toynami is to be trusted this time. Marcus's gray & white Shadow Fighter then comes out in Spring '09.

    6) Yellow's Ride Armor/Lancer's Cyclone from MegaHouse was on display. I MUST OWN THIS TOY.

    7) Right next to it was the Masterpiece Collection Scott Bernard w/Armored Cyclone. Offhand, I'd say this is a COMPLETELY different toy than the one that's been making the rounds for years. The one photo Figures.com has makes the red uniform parts look like they're made of cloth. The head was rather different -- looks like a swappable head thing, where before it looked like Scott had a removable helmet (easy to do with Scott's classic slicked-back hairdo). My Spidey-sense tells me this is actually the last of the three Japanese molds that have been in development -- the one from Beagle.

Ah, yeah, it is. Look at this early stuff I found linked through ToyBox DX's forums. Way to go, team. That'll show all those naysayers! Rebrand a few toys here, claim a toy for your own there ... in-house development? Who needs in-house development?

Anyhoo, the three things I'd probably snag out of this lot are Maia's Alpha (really want to do a VF-1S Skull One and Shadow Fighter Skull One back-to-back thing) Yellow's Ride Armor (LANCER ACTION FIGURE OMG!!!), and that Battlepod (because, hey, how often do you get a new Battlepod toy?).

The Beta? Ehh, don't have the room right now. Maybe later.

    And you?

CAN I HAS THIS YESTERDAY PLZ K THANX

(Nicked from Otaku USA Editor-In-Chief Patrick Macias's blog. Then I drew a big red circle on it in Photoshop.)

Sighted at the Shizuoka Hobby Show. Naturally, I need Lancer's lovely lavender locks in my Robotech forces, so this will be an immediate GET once they start popping up stateside. Dude's my fave New Gen character, and I've wanted a figure of him for-freakin'-ever; the fact that you get the slashing blade and the chest-mounted missile launchers on top of that, to me, is just a bonus.

Also: Macross Frontier VF-25's are tres sexy in Fighter mode. Not a fan of the Battroid mode, tho, which was on display, but methinks I'd rather end this on a positive note. Bandai's handling the toys, so they probably won't suck. Also: looked like they were going to be doing enemy toys or kits for Frontier, which is weird, but they only had grey prototypes up.

Render unto Big West the things that are Big West's ...

    Or:

Blast It, Why Can't We Have Nice Things?

In the comments thread for the below post, Roger Harkavy, who knows stuff, ruins my fun by explaining that the release of the Takatoku/Bandai Valkryies release under Toynami is simply a case of Bandai's factories cranking out X amount of Valkyries for themeselves and then Y amount of Valkyries for Toynami, and it's just kind of like the way Bandai and Gakken would crank out product to be boxed up under the ROBOTECH label back in the 1980's.

One thing he pointed out that makes a lot of sense is the fact that Bandai is a major sponsor of Macross Frontier, and consequently I doubt that Big West would have any pull with them if they didn't like the fact that Bandai is taking Harmony Gold and/or Toynami's money. I doubt any of the smaller licensees with less pull would be doing something like this -- not even, say, Yamato.

I still think this whole Big West/Tatsunoko thing is going to have to find itself sorted out sometime in the near future, even if it's through a lot of little documents that each let a little air between the two sides of the Pacific. But alas, that's going to be another day.

    Phooie.

    Ramifications.

(I stole this picture from Macross World which means I'm probably going to hell, for a variety of reasons.)

Unless you've buried your head in the sand, you have probably heard the news that Toynami will be releasing Bandai's upcoming anniversary rereleases of the ol' 1/55 scale 1980's Takatoku transformable VF-1 Valkyrie/Veritech toys worldwide. (Robotech.com ran the story, oddly enough, with no mention of Bandai at all. Which is weird, but par for the course when it comes to Robotech.com.)

Thought #1 that comes to mind looking at the preorder page at Robotech.com is that boy, $80 seems steep, especially when I'm pretty sure I bought a Super VF-1S rerelease about five or six years ago, the last time Bandai played this game (for the 20th anniversary of Macross), for about $60. But hey, these are still FANTASTIC toys, and are probably worth about, oh, say, $65 even without Fast packs and missile-firing armor pieces.

But what gets to me is the real big-time ramifications of this -- this is a Harmony Gold licensee releasing, worldwide, Big West-licensed merchandise.

Wrap your brain around that one for a minute. Let it soak in.

Bandai manufactured these Valkyries under license from Big West.

Toynami is distributing them under license from Harmony Gold.

I believe, in fact, a new day may be dawning, boys & girls. I can't help but think that between the ROBOTECH feature film in development at Warner Bros. and Big West and Satelight wanting some of that big international money for the obviously very expensive Macross Frontier, Big West and Tatsunoko (and, by proxy, Harmony Gold) are finally having to get their legal ducks in a row in order to finally begin the important business of making worldwide cash off of all that Macross material and merchandising that's been bottled up in Japan over the course of the last decade. This, my friends, would appear to be Step One.

    Your thoughts?

    * * *

While I'm back in the office, so to speak, here's another ROBOTECH anime music video I made. Enjoy.

Here Are People Who Are Reviewing Things.

-- Josh @ CollectionDX.com finds CM's Legioss & Tread good separately, bad combined, and not worth $300.

-- Atom @ CollectionDX.com finds the 2002 Toynami VF-1A Morpher not worth $2. For what it's worth, those were kind of crap, but I liked the Alphas a lot ...

-- People are still seeing The Shadow Chronicles for the first time. This guy seems to have liked it.

-- From the April 11 Palladium Books press release:

We hope to see new Robotech® sourcebooks released as soon as this Summer. We’d love to have the Macross Saga and Robotech Masters sourcebooks out by July, and the Deluxe, 8½ x 11 (hardcover?) Edition of the Robotech® Shadow Chronicles® RPG making its debut at Gen Con this August.

Southern Cross fans will be happy to know we plan to give the Robotech Masters sourcebook the royal treatment: in-depth coverage, new and updated information, and all new artwork. Writer, Jason Marker, is already doing research for this sourcebook.

We are thrilled to be working on Robotech® again, and are having a blast making it even better the second time around.

If you haven’t seen it yet, you need to run out to your local game store and take a look at a copy for yourself – assuming they can keep it in stock.

I'll be offering my thoughts on the book by the end of the month. Maybe by the end of the weekend. Though really, I shouldn't make any promises at this point ...

    Also: Royal ... treatment ... for Masters ... sourcebook ... O_O

    Can we say "YAY"?

-- Here's a review of The Art of Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles at Akibanana.com. WARNING: This person misspells my name in their review. >:(

This is the one I want.

Atom @ CollectionDX reviews the MegaHouse Mospeada Ride Armor VR-052F (Stick Type). Looks pretty good, though I'm a little worried by the comments of having to chase popped-off parts 'round the room. Both modes look pretty cool, tho..

Note that THIS is the one that Toynami is going to be selling remarked imports of in the near future (if not now -- thought I saw one of both this and the Rey type with Toynami stickers on 'em on the ol' eBay).

Lookin' Good, Lookin' Not So Good

-- Caught the above pic from the February 29th Palladium Press Release concerning the RPG via Kevin McKeever's blog. Maia and Rick are lookin' good, Marcus less so -- is it that his eyes are too close together? Is it that he seems a wee bit too broad-shouldered and manly? I dunno. Something about that art just seems off to me. But that's OK, because I'm not all that fond of Marcus anyway.

-- Moving on to more recent Palladium news, The Shadow Chronicles RPG book either has shipped or will be shipping today. Can't wait to lay my hands on a copy! (This person seems to think, despite being charged for the book already, that it's going to miss the shipping date. Mind you, the remark seems a shade tongue-in-cheek, but you never know -- it is the internet.)

-- A.J. Wells, enjoy your second link from this blog: fan buys vintage Matchbox ROBOTECH figure of favorite character, finds it lacking. Actually, Exedore's is one of the better character likenesses in that lineup. Breetai looks like a pin-headed vampire, Khyron looks like one of the Beatles, and poor Miriya looks like a dude. Let's not even talk about the 3 3/4" range and their poor, misshapen sculpts ...

Bonus trivia: Exedore's orange Zentraedi Cizion on the action figure is probably the result him having an orange Cizion in the style guide Harmony Gold provided to licensees. Check it out.

Chances are good that if you find something bizarrely off or wrongheaded on a piece of vintage ROBOTECH merchandise, it probably has its origins in the 1980's Style Guide. It is quite the font of misinformation that could have been straightened out by reviewing the show itself. (I'm half-shocked he didn't wind up with the teal trim instead of the proper green on his uniform, now that I look at the figure again.)

This is the kind of stupid trivia I thrive on. That's why it goes before the recent toy news you might actually give a crap about.

-- Moving forward in time to much, much more recent toys, Josh tells us that the Megazone 23 Part 2 Proto Garland is awesome, and (deep breath) Cyclones, Cyclones, and more Cyclones -- the MegaHouse one looks awesome but apparently has a more "intentional disassembly"-style transformation, Yaco provides some excellent comparison pics of various Cyclones, and Beagle is apparently still going to make their 1/10 scale version. Which means if we still get the Toynami version that's been shown off for years, that'll be four different Cyclone toys in the span of about a year. Crazy.

-- Also, I see that someone (it says "Roger" -- could it be our old pal Roger Harkavy?) told Yaco that the Toynami Betas are going to be $150 each, not the $80 that BBTS listed them as initially. I see that they have corrected themselves accordingly.

-- And on a personal note, I just won this item off the eBay ...

I don't care how much of a two-dimensional raging maniacal tool he is, I still kind of like T.R. Edwards. He amuses me.

    3.13.2008

Post #400 is a MASSIVE LINKDUMP OF DOOM.

-- According to ROBOTECH.COM, the Shadow Chronicles RPG should hit retailers around April 3, which is my birthday, which is awesome news to hear. Also, it is over 100 pages longer than they originally thought it would be but will still for this first printing remain at the originally publicized retail price of $16.95. Hope this doesn't cause a big problem for the folks at Paladium -- they could use some good fortune at this point!

-- At BigBadToyStore.com, preorders are open for the two Shadow Chronicles Shadow Fighters and ... drumroll please ... THE FIRST TWO TOYNAMI BETA FIGHTERS! Now mind you, BBTS is the place where the Toynami Cyclones were up for preorder with late 2007 release dates around this time last year, so this is all tentative, but it looks like Maia's lavender Shadow Fighter will be out in April, Marcus's white and gray Shadow Fighter will be out in July, and the Betas will be out in the 3rd quarter of the year (sometime from July - Sept.).

And the Betas are apparently going to only be $80 apiece.

    o_O

Wonder how they pulled THAT one off.

-- MAJOR COLLECTIONDX.COM LINKAGE ... First, a New York Toy Fair conversation with Toynami's George Sohn. Looking forward to those rebranded MegaHouse Ride Armors, if the price is right! Then, the Destroy All Podcasts guys take on Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles (hint: they didn't like it). And finally, disappointment rears its ugly head when Josh picks up the new CM's Ride Armor (Stick Type) and it all falls to pieces. (Please note that this is NOT the same one I'm expressing hope for in reference to the Sohn interview. TOO MANY CYCLONES!)

-- Hey, the recent Canadian airing of ROBOTECH on SPACE hooked someone who'd never seen it before ...
Keeping Lancer intact was just another part of Robotech’s weirdness. Is it better or worse than most anime jobs of the time? It kept in the stuff edited TV dubs normally take out, but altered things in much more radical ways.

I’m part of the “Pokemon Generation”, at once too old and too young for Robotech. After reading about it in Toyfare once upon a time, I wondered “...did he [Carl Macek] really do that?” Part of the reason I watched it was to see how it was pulled off.

-- Elsewhere, someone has mixed feelings about The Shadow Chronicles ...
I wouldn’t say it sucks totally but it’s not exactly great either. The storyline was straightforward if it’s wee bit dry, if you get my meaning. The biggest flaw for me was that I am totally unable to empathise with any of the character. I mean when one of the Romero sacrifice himself in a blaze of glory, I was thinking “fair enough, but not GAR material either”. And is it just me or does the Haydonite looks like a rip off of the Cylon from Battlestar Galactica?

-- And finally ... these words look very familiar to me. Hmm, where might I have seen them before?

The NEXT one will be the 400th post on this blog ...

Clearing out some links from the backlog ...

    • Treiz lets us know that Palladium has the finished cover art for the Shadow Chronicles RPG book up at their website (which I yoinked and put above). If you pop over there, you can also preorder the book.

Oh, and Kevin Siembieda is also selling off original ROBOTECH artwork on eBay, including an oh-so-iconic Kevin Long piece from the original ROBOTECH RPG sourcebook. Check it out!

    • Roger Harkavy points out Matt Alt's essay at Néojaponisme on the messages of Macross, "War in a Material World".

That really got me thinking about yet another way to contrast the Macross TV series and the movie -- at least in ROBOTECH's dialogue, it's Minmei who really pushes the idea on her aunt and uncle that "this is still our good old hometown" that helps everyone keep their spirits up in the face of their "trapped in a battleship in deep space" circumstance -- but by the time we're introduced to Macross City in the movie, the place has a functioning McDonald's, for crying out loud. Macross City in the movie, in keeping with the "everything is bigger and shinier in the movie" theme, is a fully-functioning metropolis within the Macross and feels devoid of that plucky can-do spirit that epitomizes the Macross City of the TV series. Part of it could be the fact that we just don't get as much time in Macross City during the movie's running time, or spend any time dealing with the citizens on the ground or what-have-you ... but I dunno, living in movie Macross looks awfully luxurious compared to TV Macross, which always had this feeling of being stuck in the Space Frontier where you have to roll up your sleeves and fix those walls every other day with duct tape, spare sheet metal, and parts recycled from that Destroid that blew up across the street the other day.

    • And Brian Diegnan provides a link over to ASM's coverage of this weekend's New York Toy Fair, specifically the Toynami display image gallery, where everything new that's shown off is boxes -- specifically, the Masterpiece Collection box for Maia Sterling's Skull One and the Japanese box for the long-awaited Toynami Cyclone.

Soooooo, has anyone talked to George Sohn or one of his employees about when the hell these toys are coming out? Because this is getting totally ridiculous.

      Bonus Toy Update - 4:52 p.m.
Have you seen the latest photos of the CM's Legioss-Tread combo set? It looks niftilicious.

    • Comic book blogger Mike Sterling opened his Sunday post with the hideously jagged logo for Academy Comics' Sentinels Halloween Special. Noted just because wow, wasn't expecting to see that there.

    1.01.2008

    It's a new day.

First off, apologies for my absence from this blog for the past few weeks. Right before the holidays, an ice storm knocked out power to the better part of Southeast Kansas (as well as Southwest Missouri and most of Oklahoma) for a few days. Up 'til then I was at least posting the tidbits people sent me -- podcast reminders, notes from Roger about the movement on the toy front. Stuff like that. But even at that point nothing going on had really excited me. I mean, at this point I still haven't bought the Shadow Chronicles Whoop-Dee-Doo Edition. If I have thirty dollars burning a hole in my pocket, I'm gonna spend it on that one DVD of Paradise Kiss I don't have, not a movie I spent the better part of two years eagerly anticipating, traveled across the entire state of Missouri to watch in a theatrical presentation, and purchased the midnight it was released. That was the endpoint right there -- buying it in a store. That's where the overwhelming excitement stopped. It's gone. You can't get it back. Not without something new. Probably the only way I'll buy the Shadow Chronicles: We Want All Your Money edition is if I can find it cheap. Or if the Sam Goody Exclusive Lenticular version puts me in some kind of trance. One or the other.

Likewise, it just hasn't been in the budget to pick up any of the new Mospeada> toys, or I'd at least be able to talk about them -- though man, it does sound like I dodged a bullet there. Toys so crappy they felled the Beta Fighter. Or is that still going on? You know, I almost as a rule don't listen to podcasts, so I didn't listen to that episode of Chris Meadows's Space Station Liberty where Tommy Yune talked about all that. It doesn't actually matter, since as our good friend Roger Harkavy let me know a little while back, CM's is releasing their version (in Japan) in February, for about three hundred bucks. The thing that makes me think I need to save my pennies for that is that it looks solid -- the antithesis of the Toynami Alpha, whose plastic feels like it's going to break eight ways to Sunday with every transformation. Oh, it's got all the fiddly little details right, but it is not a playable thing, and at this point in my life that's the one thing I value in a toy above all. Do I want to take it off the shelf and play with it? I look at those photographs of the CM's Legioss, and I just want to reach into the screen, grab it, and go "ZOOM, ZOOM!" with it, it looks so durable, solid and playable. And they have a pretty damn good track record, unlike our pals at Toynami, who have been making mecha fans shake their heads gravely for over half a decade now.

Speaking of podcasts, well ... the Destroy All Podcasts guys wrapped up their "Robotech Trilogy of Pain" with Robotech The Movie: The Untold Story, and then for Christmas gave an extra-long go at Super Dimension Fortress Macross. Now, I usually listen to Destroy All Podcasts, because they like what I like -- creaky old '80s mecha shows, and they've been on kind of a ROBOTECH-related kick. But much in the same way that I missed posting their last two links -- which they kindly sent me -- I missed listening to 'em as well. So I wake up this morning (late, after a long night of watching anime and making up terrible new Power Ranger shows and bitching about Marvel and DC Comics with my friend Levi) to get this text message on my phone from pal and co-conspirator Evan:

*sigh* The DX boys diss u & ur RT blog in their latest ep, & refer 2 countless women as "bitch"es... I'm through w/ them.

I thought this was about some sort of brand-new release, and they were turning on me after not posting those last two links -- yes, I assumed such a small slight would earn me some trash talk, how they really feel now that I was apparently no longer supporting them -- but given that the only reason Evan listens to the show is the ROBOTECH-related content and nothing new popped up on the Collection DX site when I looked at it, I could only figure that Evan just finally turned on the Macross show, about which I noticed Jeremy wrote to me:

We actually mention you in this podcast. Andrew tries to talk shit and I yell at him. :)

You know, I have such a thin skin, I think I'm not gonna give that one a listen. Probably better that way.

As for the comment about all the times women are called bitches ... yeah, that sounds like Destroy All Podcasts. I enjoy it most of the time, but I do have to admit, there's a streak of (hopefully) unthinking Harry Knowles-like casual "boys' club" frat house misogyny going on there.

(And then Jeremy says, "Okay guys, I'm sorry, you were right -- that guy sucks.")

I'm sure some of you are curious what I think of the new Macross show that premiered over the Christmas holiday, Macross Frontier. Well, here's what I wrote to my pal James "Tolarin Skylar" Pickens over the break:

Two words: TOO FAMILIAR. It's a very pretty show with some neat bits to it (love the exo-gauntlets and boots, esp. the way they integrate into the Valkyrie cockpit), but unless it really winds up throwing us for a loop within the first few episodes, based on the first half hour I doubt it'll have anything to say that wasn't well stated and developed in the original Macross TV series twenty-five years ago. I couldn't help but notice all the parallels between Frontier and all the other Macross animation (good on 'em for integrating the best parts of Macross Plus's setting; it does an excellent job giving the show, despite its own farther-in-the-future setting, a modern approximation of the not-too-distant future feel of the original series) -- including Macross II (Wendy Ryder + brain = this show's singing star). It was cute for a while, but I rolled my eyes when I saw the exo-gauntlets against the sky in that familiar hand-as-plane-flying gesture Isamu always did. The "we knew this was coming" idiotic military commander nonsense was grating -- SUCH A DAMNABLE CLICHE -- and honestly, the moment when the non-military pilot leapt into the Gerwalk and started rapid-firing at the enemy mecha/creature/whatever to save the girl was the moment I decided once and for all that I just didn't care. The last three Macross shows were so much their own things -- based on what I've seen, this is nothing more than a well-polished echo.

My pal Levi tells me I should give it four or five episodes. Personally, I'd rather not bother with it. Clearly it is not for me.

    Moving along ...

Regarding the comic contest, the new deadline to get your entries in (since I know some of you are still scribbling away, or scrambling to find artists, or whatnot) is ...

    January 23, 2008

    Mark your calendars.

Let's see, what else to mention before I wrap this thing up ... the issue of Protoculture Addicts magazine with my article on the history of the ROBOTECH franchise is currently available, so if you have six bucks sitting around (plus shipping), you can buy that. Or not. I really don't care either way. It's not like I'm seeing a nickel of that.

I'm going to end this by answering a few questions shot my way by Tariq Mohsen, whose name I goofed up on a Roboblog Chronicles video once, the poor guy. He sent these along about half a month ago, so I gotta apologize to him again. What can I say, hypothetical Jeremy is right: I suck.

Since the McKinney novels (sentinels) have been relegated to secondary canon now with the new plans with Shadow Chronicles/Rising, what is known about Janice Em? Due to the her self-sacrifice to eliminate Edwards in the Genesis Pit, has her memory been damaged to the point that she doesn't recall the REF adventures? Was she created solely by humans, a.k.a Dr. Lang, or is she part Haydonite? It seems some of the main characters, particularly Vince Grant, do not remember her. I'm not sure whether that is a further indication that she was a later creation than that suggested in the Sentinels' novels and comics. Have any thoughts?

In Prelude to the Shadow Chronicles, the original purple-haired Janice Em -- the one that was Minmei's singing partner -- drags T.R. Edwards into a Genesis Pit vat, where he mutates into a giant Regent-like beast that very nearly transfigures and ascends to a higher plane like the Invid Regess at the end of New Generation. Torn in half during the battle, Janice survives long enough to send the SDF-3 a homing pulse that they can lock onto to fire their twin-barreled synchro-cannon and destroy Edwards once and for all. Just before the cannon fires, Janice manages a long-distance upload of some of her memory banks to a new body -- the one seen in The Shadow Chronicles -- built by Lang in cooperation with the Haydonites.

Now, the temporal cues in Prelude suck because they were kept intentionally vague. But everyone acts like the end of the mess with Edwards wasn't that long ago during the epilogue scenes, maybe a week or so, so the Janice we see in The Shadow Chronicles hasn't been operational for very long at all. She also doesn't really look or act like the old Janice, so when someone like Vince Grant is getting all in her face about being a tool of the Haydonites, I don't think he realizes that there's any of the old Janice -- who he actually watched valiantly sacrifice herself on Optera -- in there. He probably thinks this is a separate android out of Lang's lab that just happens to have the same name. And seriously, given the fact that she's missing that tactless sarcastic edge of the old Janice, replaced with a wholly generic innocent "oh, humans are so interesting!" riff, I don't blame him one bit.

According to the novels and some evidence in macross-related anime (particularly Macross Plus), the mechamorphosis (and subsequent control) of Alphas and other mecha into battloid and guardian modes is atleast partially done through 'thinking-caps' that the pilots possess. This was not the case in SC, and certainly not seen in the NG tv series. Are we to assume that the thinking-caps have been "de-canonized" from Robotech lore, then?

As numerous fans have pointed out over the years, the "thinking cap" element of mechamorphosis really isn't supported by the show footage -- characters in all three generations are seen to pilot and transform Robotech mecha sans helmet on occasion (the one that jumps out at me is Scott Bernard piloting his Alpha sans armor in "Enter Marlene" -- that's actually the moment when I went "Waiiiiiit a sec!" as regards the whole "thinking cap" thing, back when I was in junior high). In Macross Plus it was only the YF-21 that had any sort of thought control, and well, you saw how well THAT went down -- there's a reason they took it out for the production run of YF-22's (seen in Macross 7), and I don't think it was expense. Thought control is a tricky thing -- a stray thought can screw up the works, hence the phrase repeated throughout the novels, "nothing extraneous in mind and body." I don't think there's anything the "thinking cap" offers that can't be put into more reliable effect with some computer algorithms to smooth out the mecha's movement -- except that McKinney wanted the transformational aspect of the Veritech to be somehow tethered to the "magical" properties of Protoculture, and attaching that to the human mind does that on some level.

In short, though, yeah, I think "thinking caps" are out.

Do you think Lynn Minmei will make an appearance in the next film/series? I know that the last time she was mentioned was in the last of the Prelude comic books, and she's being taken to Tirol by Jack Baker. Did she really have a relationship with Rem, or are we to consider that nulled until further notice from Yune and co. ? The same question about Miriya Sterling...Rick mentions that there is more than one Sterling that can lead the Skull: does he just mean Maia? For Dana is more closely associated with the Hovertanks. That leaves only Miriya. I hope the reason Dana not talking to Maia isn't because Miriya possibly passed in childbirth...? That would be a shame. I haven't read the Sentinels novels all through yet, I am still halfway through World Killers.

Tommy Yune has gone on record as saying that Lynn Minmei's story is over. The only reason she even appeared in the Prelude to the Shadow Chronicles comic book series is because T.R. Edwards' capture of her was set up in the original Sentinels storyline it was based on. The comics spent just enough time on it to wrap it all up with the minimum amount of the character -- she doesn't even get a chance to say good bye. Whether it's out of respect for the original Macross character or because he secretly hates her, I have no clue, but in any case as long as Yune is running ROBOTECH I doubt we'll see her again.

Taking that into account, consider the fact that Rem appears in the last issue of Prelude in a scene that seems to exist only to set up certain characters to use later -- him, Cabell, and Dana Sterling. If Minmei isn't going to appear and Rem is being put on deck for Shadow Rising, obviously the whole Rem & Minmei thing isn't going to happen.

You know what? That idea you had there, Miriya dying in childbirth explaining why Dana and Maia don't talk, isn't half bad. But Maia says at the end of The Shadow Chronicles that her family is on-board the SDF-3, and with Dana -- I assume, based on Prelude -- joining the action in Shadow Rising, I think she's referring to Max and Miriya.

I still think that Max and Miriya haven't show up because Harmony Gold wants to leave open the possibility of using Macross 7 as a part of ROBOTECH (as ridiculous an idea as it might be) so they don't want to commit themselves to a different set of character designs for Max and Miriya, but given the age of that show and the legal wrangling that still seems to be going on in Japan, that ship has probably sailed.

Rick's reference to more than one Sterling being able to lead the Skull is, at this point, pretty obviously just a reference to Maia, designed to make sense only after you've watched The Shadow Chronicles since Maia's last name is never given in Prelude.

We know that the Wolff alpha-beta teams are integral in the SC. But what happened to his hovertank legions? Or does the SC Wolf team have nothing to do with the original"Wolff" Pack? And now that Vince is captain aboard the Icarus (or is it the Arch Angel? I can't remember!), where is the GMU and who is in charge of it? Its a pity the hovertanks have not made an appearance yet. Then again, there hasn't been any ground-based battles in SC to begin with, so....

Remember, there was a Veritech Wolf Team referred to in the early episodes of The Macross Saga -- the same one that, in the Battlecry video game, Jack Archer served with and later took command of (or was he in command in the beginning? It's been a while since I played that game ...). I think the Wolf Squadron under Daryl Taylor was more a nod to that than a reference to Jonathan Wolfe. Though I don't think it's outside of the realm of possibility that Sentinels mainstay Jack Baker took command of the Wolf Squadron from Jonathan Wolfe himself when Wolfe took off to fight the Masters or the Invid or whatever they said in "Eulogy" ...

Vince commanded the Tokugawa in Prelude for one mission. It was destroyed, then he took command of Edwards's Icarus and led THAT ship for all of a couple days at most before trading up to the Ark Angel, which he's commanding at the end of The Shadow Chronicles. The GMU, if you're going by the Sentinels novels and comics, was lost in the destruction of the planet Praxis; who knows if it even exists in the new timeline since it was basically a G.I. Joe vehicle added to Sentinels as a concession to toy manufacturer Matchbox (at least, that's what Macek said in Robotech Art 3, IIRC).

Maybe I need to do better research, but...when the SDF-3 left Earth in 2020 (or 2022?), did it take with it the only working protoculture matrix? If so, what are the three mounds we see in Southern Cross that contain the Flowers of Life? How does SC make connection with Carl Macek's work in this regard? Could it be that when the SDF-1 was destroyed during Khyron's final attack, Zor's protoculture matrix was dispersed in the vicinity of Lake Gloval, and what remains of it is seen in Southern Cross? Then what could be aboard the SDF-3? Or did Rem help make another one later during the Sentinels expedition? I am a little confused. Please help de-mystify.

2020 according to the novels, 2022 by every other source. Remember, the timelines don't exactly match up, especially given that Harmony Gold pushed New Generation forward about eight years when they devised the timeline at Robotech.com.

The SDF-3 didn't have any Protoculture Matrix -- or maybe I should say Protoculture Factory -- when they left for Tirol. The one that's discussed in Shadow Chronicles aboard the SDF-3 is assumed to basically be the one Rem made in the novels following the Sentinels Campaign. That's the only thing that makes sense. Otherwise, well ...

One thing that always frustrated me about the early Sentinels comics and the actual TV series scripts presented in the Malibu Graphics script books is the way the characters talk like the SDF-3 is basically the SDF-1 restored. If it's the SDF-1 restored, then yeah, it would have the Protoculture Factory on-board, so when the Masters arrived, they'd find NOTHING. It contradicts the original TV show. If you just sent the SDF-1 back into space, and the Masters come to Earth, they go, "Oh shit! We just missed what we were looking for!" and double back. But no, when they see the mounds and check their readings, they know they've found the ruins of the SDF-1, and within, the lost Protoculture Factory/Matrix. So it cannot be aboard the SDF-3.

So yes, Rem probably made it. After all, he's around and we'll probably be seeing him in Shadow Rising, if the scene in Prelude meant anything.

And so I skulk back into the darkness for the time being. If you want some reliable ROBOTECH blogging in the interim, there's always Evan Cass's protoCULTURE blog. Don't worry, I'll be back. After all, I've still got a contest to wrap up ...

    Later.

    Aoshima TLEAD (Beta Fighter) cancelled!

According to Matt Alt at the ToyBox DX forums, Yaco of YacoLog has spoken to the folks at Aoshima and confirmed that they will not be producing the TLEAD (Veritech Beta Fighter) owing to the quality control problems they had with their release of the Legioss Fighters cast from retooled versions of the Toynami Masterpiece Collection Alpha Fighter mold.

    Read the original report here.

What does this mean for the Toynami version of the Beta Fighter? Well, this certainly can't be a good sign ...
