F-Y-I
I finally read and responded to the comments thread on the Macross Frontier post a couple of posts down. So if you left a comment there, take a look. I probably said something about it.
(Before you ask, no, I haven't watched episodes two or three. Not going to, either. I know I'll just be watching them looking for reasons to hate on the show some more, which would be a giant waste of my time and yours -- mine watching it, and yours reading my venom-filled and probably slightly unreasonable rantings that would invariably follow.)

meh, ep2 was more of the same, but ep3 is better. More character and less mechporn, and seeing Sharon watching the home shopping channel in space was Epic win!

Like an idiot, I didn't add that I knew *why* pretty boys were there. I'm just tired of fanboys thinking that simply having characters girls might like to look at detracts from credibility.
In this case, did we forget about Max and the rest so soon? :P
I might give Mac F a look-see one day, but so far it feels like the Macross universe isn't my thing.

I've seen through episode 5. Though there are still a few obvious homages, I think the series is moving away from trying to be a "straight" Macross clone and finding more of its own identity.
I like it so far. The characters are interesting, and the human-Zentradi interaction shown in episode 5 was kind of neat. And I rather like the Zentradi Queadlun-rau pilot character who loses ten years of age when she is micronized (due to a genetic defect).
